If you have ever driven in unsuitable footwear you are no doubt aware that it is not only uncomfortable and you feel a little wary but it is also dangerous as risks of foot slippage is that much higher.
Well thanks to the Daily Mail, Concept Vehicle Leasing can share with you an article that has been written to report how dangerous it is to drive in a new type of footwear, which has become more popular over the years to drive in and that is 'Flip-Flops'.
Flip-flops are great to wear down at the beach or when we get a little bit more sun but they are extremely dangerous to drive in due to their bendy nature and high risk of getting trapped under the brake or accelerator. According to research Flip Flops are responsible for up to 1.4million near misses and accidents every year. Obviously due to the nature of the shoe, more women wear them and so the results are more female geared and this reflects in the number of female accidents but this does not reflect the skill level of driving between the sexes just the footwear chosen really.
The time it takes to brake in flip flops doubles when compared to normal shoes which is a huge increase and one which can be fatal. It is surprising to note that nearly 60% say they have driven in footwear which is unsuitable for driving, with 20% of them continuing to wear bad footwear even though they know the dangers.
A colleague over at Sheilas' Wheels, Jacky Brown, quoted: 'It's worrying that so many drivers out there do not realise the impact their footwear choices can have on their safety at the wheel. 'Millions may think they can drive safely but may not realise the shortcomings of the flip-flop until it's too late - putting themselves, their passengers and other drivers at risk every time they get in the car'.
Remember that whether you own your car or have it on a contract hire through vehicle leasing it is important to be as safe a driver as you can and this includes sensible footwear.
