Time to clean up your Act!

If you're a small business operating in London, then you're probably already aware of some of the fees and charges for driving into our Capital.

You've got the London Congestion Charge for all bar Electric Vehicles which is currently £11.50 per day. And if you're running older, more polluting vehicles – you've also got the "T-Charge which is an additional £10 per day – this is payable if you driver a vehicle into the London Congestion charge which doesn't meet the current minimum Euro 4 / IV standards.

The T-Charge is to be replaced by the Ultra-Low Emission Zone on 8th April 2019 – and the rules on air pollution and minimum emission standards are set to tighten. You'll now need to be operating a minimum Euro 6 standard to avoid a minimum £12.50 daily charge. For a commercial vehicle, this typically means your vehicle will have to be registered after 1st Sept 2016 to avoid the charge – but do check.

It's worth noting that the new ULEZ will operate on a 24/7 basis – so you'll need to pay even if you drive into London during the night or at a weekend.

How about £3,500 for your old van?

If you're a small business operating in and around London, help is at hand with the Mayor of London (TFL) offering a grant of £3,500 if you opt to buy or lease a new van or minibus which meets the new emission standards.

Good news if you're a small business and want to save up to £387.50 per month!

What's the catch?

Well like most grants and subsidies from Government and Local Authority, there are limits. For a start, the fund is limited to £23 million – which could effectively take up to around 6,500 high polluting light commercial vehicles and minibuses off London's streets.

You'll also need to be an active "Microbusiness" or a Charity with fewer than 10 employees, and up to £632k revenue or £316k balance sheet in the previous financial year. You'll also need to be registered at Companies House or be VAT registered to qualify.

Importantly – you've also got to be able to scrap a pre-Euro 6 van or minibus which has been driven into the Congestion Charging Zone at least 52 times during the six months prior to 22 February 2019. It's also got to be insured for business use and have been owned for more than 12 months.

So, there are quite a few catches……. but we are talking £3,500 of free money!
