Alfa Romeo has opened its UK order books for the performance-focused Stelvio Quadrifoglio SUV. Power comes from the Ferrari-engineered 2.9-litre V6 Bi-Turbo petrol engine and is delivered to the Q4 all-wheel-drive system via an eight-speed, ZF-sourced automatic transmission.
It's the same 510hp / 600Nm engine and gearbox as installed in the brutally fast rear-wheel drive Giulia Quadrifoglio Verde saloon. You won't hear Alfa Romeo admit it, but it has the same bore and stroke as the V8 in Ferrari's 488 GTB. The Alfa's 2.9-litre V6 is pretty much the same thing - with two cylinders lopped off.
Under normal driving conditions the Q4 system transfers 100 per cent of the available torque to the rear axle. As each rear wheel reaches its grip limit, the system transmits up to half the available torque to the front axle. The Stelvio Quadrifoglio will sprint from 0-62mph in just 3.8 seconds and go on to a top speed of 176mph – where permitted, of course.
Alfa's special edition Stelvio will come exclusively equipped with the Alfa Chassis Domain Control unit. It is said to coordinate all of the car's electronic systems to deliver peak performance. The system simultaneously assigns specific tasks to the various active systems, such as the Alfa DNA Pro selector, Q4 all-wheel drive, Alfa Active Torque Vectoring system, Alfa Active Suspension system and the ESC. Torque Vectoring makes it possible to deliver torque to each wheel individually to improve control.
Standard specification includes special 20-inch Quadrifoglio alloy wheels which fit comfortably within specifically profiled wheel arches, a restyled rear diffuser, a sports exhaust with four outlets and bi-xenon headlamps with LED daytime running lights.
Inside, the Stelvio Quadrifoglio comes standard with a leather dashboard and door tops, leather and Alcantara seats, leather steering wheel, carbon fibre trim and stainless steel pedals. The centre of the dashboard is dominated by the 8.8-inch Alfa Connect infotainment system, with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto to replicate the smartphone environment on the on-board display.
Active and passive safety kit includes advanced autonomous emergency braking, lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring, an integrated braking system, forward collision warning and a rear-view camera with guide lines.
